Sweet Talk AwardsAdult Achiever of the Year
Congratulations - Gavin Wright
“I spent nearly 40 years living with type 1 diabetes and thinking that all sorts of opportunities were closed to me. When I finally took my bike to some wild places I always made a big point of telling people: Diabetes didn’t stop me. It truly didn’t and it never will – don’t let it ever stop you either.” - Gavin
Gavin has had type 1 diabetes for 47 years and he is determined not to let it hold him back.
A fanatical cyclist, Gavin has been exploring high altitude cycling - going solo over the Annamite Mountains in Indochina before partnering with a friend to ride through the Peruvian Andes, reaching altitudes of 4,818m.
Inspired, he then attempted a world record by cycling to the top of the highest volcano in the world, Ojos del Salado, in remote northern Chile standing at 22,615ft high.

Gavin is a regular rider in the Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge and was instrumental in breaking the record for the biggest team of Australian cyclists, 16 team members, with type 1 diabetes.
Inspiring other type 1 diabetics to challenge themselves, Gavin’s favourite saying is: “Diabetes didn’t stop me”.
